37-year-old Nigerian to pay Dh100,000 in fine and to be deported after completing jail term

A man who was caught at the airport allegedly smuggling 1.5kg of cocaine was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Thursday.

The Court of First Instance ordered the 37-year-old Nigerian to pay Dh100,000 in fine and that he be deported after completing his jail term. The transit traveller was caught on March 9 at the Dubai International Airport after customs officers suspected he had drugs in his gut.

The forensic report showed that the defendant had tried to smuggle 90 capsules containing cocaine. A police corporal said in the prosecution investigation: "I was assigned as a guard on him while he was at hospital. He stayed in the intensive care and dropped some of the capsules."

A surgery had to be conducted to remove the remaining capsules. When the defendant recovered, he was referred to the General Directorate of Narcotics.

The court ordered the confiscation of the capsules weighing more than 1.5kg. The verdict remains subject to appeal.
